Ear wax is a natural substance produced by glands underneath the ear canal surface. It is composed of lipids, cholesterol, sweat and cerumen. Most people produce ear wax in small quantities enough to fulfil its function of protecting the ear, by trapping bacteria and dirt. Ear wax also lubricates the ear, and prevents dryness.
A small cohort of people produce excessive amounts of ear wax. This can lead to symptoms of hearing loss, feeling of fullness, pressure symptoms, tinnitus or itchiness. Occasionally if left untreated, ear wax can lead to an increase in the risk of ear infections.
The worst thing you can do to try and unblock your ears is use a cotton bud! Not only will this push the ear wax further down, exacerbating your symptoms, but it will likely cause damage to the ear canal or eardrum.
Microsuction
As per NHS recommendation, microsuction is the safest and most effective way of clearing ear wax from the ear canal. Microsuction uses a gentle suction device under direct microscopic vision; it is not a water-based method unlike ear irrigation or ear syringing. How long will it take?
We book 30 min appointments which is sufficient time to take a brief medical history, sign a consent form and perform the ear wax removal procedure.
What causes ear wax to build up?
Ear wax is a combination of substances (cholesterol, skin, oils and sweat) which are produced by specialised glands under the ear canal surface. Approximately 20% of the UK population regularly require ear wax removal to unblock their ears and relieve their symptoms of hearing loss, itchiness etc. Ear wax normally moves out of the ear canal naturally over weeks to months via a specialised self cleaning mechanism, but when this mechanism fails, ear wax builds up in the ear canal.
