How do I get an ear infection?

Ear infections can occur in the outer ear known as ear canal infections or Otitis Externa (Swimmers Ear), or in the middle ear (Otitis media). The latter is more common in young children.
Common causes for Otitis Externa include, swimming, poor hand hygiene, skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis, excessive untreated ear wax and trauma. Less common causes include Diabetes, poor immune function and the use of multiple antibiotics giving rise to fungal ear infections.
What should you do if you suspect an ear infection? It is very important to stop any softening ear drops (Olive Oil, Sodium Bicarbonate), keep you ear completely dry and take appropriate pain relief for symptom control before seeing a medical professional.

Outer Ear Infections (Otitis Externa)

These ear infections typically cause inflammation of the external ear, the opening of the ear canal and the ear canal itself. The skin becomes red, swollen and can leak pus (discharge). If the infection affects the external ear cartilage (the floppy part of the ear) then you should seek medical intervention immediately, as this can lead to a permanent change in shape of the ear if left untreated. The ear canal itself can become infected normally due to an ingrowing hair (Furunculitis), or swimming pool water (Swimmers Ear).

Middle ear infections (Otitis Media)
Otitis Media normally occurs in children as a result of a developing Eustachian Tube. Otitis Media typically follows an upper respiratory tract infection. Muffled hearing, your child tugging their ears or if they aren’t focusing in school are common signs of middle ear infections.

Treatment options
At Ornina Ear Clinic we offer the latest treatment options for outer ear infections in our Enfield clinic. We recommend microsuction to clear any discharge and then medication to treat your infection in the form of antibiotics or antifungals. In severe cases we can also provide pain relief and symptom control. Specifically for middle ear infections, we may recommend the use of nasal sprays to decongest the nose in additional to antibiotics, to treat the initial acute phase.
Our clinic has partnered up with Auris Ear Care, who offer out of hours treatment in your home. If you think you have an ear infection but are unable to leave your home and would like to be seen urgently, call Dr. Riaz Rampuri on 07539 248 324.
FAQs
Should I get my ear wax cleared before or after ear infection treatment?
We recommend that you clear your ears first of any ear wax, debris or discharge, a clean ear canal responds much better to antibiotic or antifungal eardrops.
Can you prescribe antibiotics?
Yes, we have an ENT doctor who can prescribe the required treatment after a full examination of your ear.
Do I need a GP referral prior to booking an appointment?
No, we understand that ear pain needs to be seen urgently so you can usually be seen on the same day you enquire
Can I fly if I have an ear infection?
Depends on the type of ear infection, in most cases you can fly, but our ear doctor will give you the best after care advice during your consultation.
